Smoke-resistant seals (WRD) 💨
WRD (Sa/S200, Ra/R200): controlled smoke spread in sub-compartments and escape routes, in accordance with Bbl and NEN 6075.
In a real fire, smoke determines in the first minutes whether people can escape safely – or not. In stairwells, corridors and critical rooms, smoke resistance (WRD) is not a theoretical term but a hard safety and legal requirement.
BraVeBo B.V. designs, installs and certifies smoke control seals that safeguard the WRD performance of your separations: from sub-compartment to protected escape route.
- focus on WRD in accordance with NEN 6075 (Ra/R200)
- use of components with proven Sa/S200 classes
- integrated approach to separation + door + penetrations + ducts
- fully traceable installation and documentation

Why smoke control seals are critical
Smoke decides survival
In almost every serious building fire, the pattern is the same:
- Smoke is faster than flames – fire is still in the room while smoke is already in the corridor.
- Escape routes fill within minutes with toxic smoke.
- Most fatalities in building fires are caused by smoke inhalation, not direct flame contact.
A wall, door or penetration can be fully EI 60 and still behave like a “smoke sieve”:
- leakage along gaps and junctions
- poorly sealed cable and pipe penetrations
- ducts and shafts that carry smoke directly to other spaces
Result: on paper you meet EI; in reality you lose the escape route.
Legally: EI-only is not enough where WRD is required
The Besluit bouwwerken leefomgeving (Bbl / Dutch Building Decree) distinguishes between:
- fire resistance (WBDBO / EI) → assessed with e.g. NEN 6068
- smoke resistance (WRD) → assessed with NEN 6075
Anywhere the Bbl prescribes a smoke-resistant separation, the rule is:
> EI alone is legally insufficient. > You must demonstrably comply with WRD in accordance with NEN 6075 (Ra / R200), using components with appropriate Sa / S200 classes.
BraVeBo translates those standards into concrete design, installation and documentation.

Where we safeguard WRD
We implement smoke control seals in environments where life safety, uptime and liability are critical:
- Sub-compartments (SBC)
- apartments, hotels, healthcare facilities, sleeping areas - patient rooms, ICU / high-care zones
- Protected and extra protected escape routes
- stairwells - fire and smoke-separating corridors
- Technical and mission-critical rooms
- control rooms, data centres, MER/SER rooms - shafts, cable risers, service ducts that can transport smoke between compartments
For each project we connect:
- separating constructions (walls / floors / ceilings)
- doors, dampers and grille solutions (Sa/S200)
- penetrations, joints and junctions
into one demonstrably smoke-resistant system.

WRD in practice: balancing Ra/R200 and Sa/S200
In simple terms:
- Sa / S200 → smoke performance of individual components
- e.g. door sets tested in accordance with EN 1634-3, smoke control dampers, certain penetration systems
- Ra / R200 → smoke performance of the separation as a whole
- wall/floor + door + joints + penetrations + ducts
A design that works in practice:
- combines components with proven Sa/S200 performance
- ensures the total leakage of the separation remains within the limits for Ra or R200
- takes into account use, maintenance and re-entry (installers will come back…)

Our smoke control sealing systems
BraVeBo works with tested and classified systems from leading manufacturers (such as Firetect and ROCKWOOL). We combine:
- Penetration seals
- cable bundles, cable trays, metal and plastic pipes - multi-service openings with mixed installations
- Smoke-resistant joints and junctions
- linear joints in walls and floors - connections between walls, floors, façades and duct elements
- Intumescent and smoke-tight solutions
- collars, wraps, graphite bands - smoke-tight coatings, sealants and boards
For each detail we consider:
- required EI rating and WRD requirement (Ra / R200)
- target Sa / S200 class of the components
- type of use (moving services, re-entry, maintenance)
- environmental factors (temperature, moisture, contamination, vibration)
Result: a system that not only stops fire but also keeps smoke inside the compartment.

BraVeBo’s smoke-resistance guarantee: from standard to compliance
This is where the difference lies between “cheap EI-only” and a truly integrated WRD design.
Your benefits at a glance
- Full compliance:
Integration of fire resistance (EI) in accordance with NEN 6068 with smoke resistance (WRD) in accordance with NEN 6075 (Ra / R200, Sa / S200) and ISSO-SBR 809.
- Real safety in escape routes:
Not just a number on paper, but escape routes that remain low-smoke in the critical first minutes.
- Manageable liability:
In this context, EI + WRD is not a luxury upgrade but the only defensible baseline where lives, continuity and reputation are at stake.
- Traceable WRD chain:
Each penetration system is labelled and fully documented in a digital compliance dossier, including all WRD-relevant data.
We ensure that your penetrations and seals support and demonstrate the WRD performance required of the separation.

Traceability: your audited proof of smoke safety
We provide fully documented, audited evidence of safety. Our focus on traceability builds confidence with authorities and insurers and reduces your liability.
Every smoke control seal receives a unique QR label that links directly to its digital EI + WRD compliance file. This strengthens compliance, speeds up inspections and reduces liability risk.
What we secure for you:
- Unique identification: QR/ID per seal, linked to work order and drawing.
- Penetration data: type (cable, tray, pipe/duct), diameter/dimensions, residual openings.
- Full documentation: photo log before–during–after, exact location (room/coordinates), materials used with batch/lot and DoP/CE.
- Classified solution: product/series, ETA/EAD (ETAG 026) reference, EI classification + WRD Sa/S200 in accordance with NEN 6075 / EN 13501-2 / EN 1366-3/-4 / ISSO-SBR 809.
- Audit & archiving: complete file (PDF/ZIP), 10-year retention in Fire Seal DB, with version control and role-based access.
Your benefit: faster inspections, audits and insurance claims, direct traceability for re-entry work, and a stronger legal position.
Our approach: smoke safety without disruption
- Specialist teams: Technicians with VCA VOL and NEN 3140 qualifications, experienced in mission-critical environments (healthcare, data, industry, high security).
- Engineering to NEN 6075 & ISSO-SBR 809: System selection and detailing so both EI and WRD remain demonstrably intact, even after re-entry works.
- Surgical planning: Work windows aligned with your uptime requirements; minimal footprint, maximum predictability.
- Single point of accountability: From survey and design to installation and digital WRD documentation under one VCA-certified partner.
Your benefit: smoke-safe compartments without operational disruption.
